Laparoscopic Resection of Endometriosis
y
Laparoscopic resection of endometriosis is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat endometriosis by removing visible disease while preserving healthy tissue. It is considered the gold‑standard surgical approach for women with moderate to severe symptoms.
Indications for Surgery
Surgery may be recommended if endometriosis is suspected or confirmed and symptoms are not adequately controlled with medical treatment. Common indications include:
Persistent pelvic pain or period pain
Pain with intercourse
Bowel or bladder symptoms related to endometriosis
Reduced fertility where endometriosis may be a contributing factor
Endometriosis involving organs such as the bowel, bladder, or ligaments
The decision to proceed with surgery is individualised following careful assessment and discussion of treatment options.
How the Surgery Is Performed
Laparoscopic surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic. Small incisions are made in the abdomen, allowing the surgeon to insert a camera and fine instruments. Endometriosis lesions are carefully identified and completely excised (cut out), rather than burned, to reduce the risk of recurrence and improve symptom relief.
Where necessary, surgery may involve multiple pelvic organs and is performed with meticulous attention to anatomy and nerve preservation. Most patients go home the same day or after an overnight stay.
Risks and Recovery
Laparoscopic surgery is generally safe, but as with all surgery, risks exist. These include bleeding, infection, injury to surrounding organs (such as the bowel, bladder, ureters or blood vessels), blood clots, and anaesthetic risks. There is also a possibility that pain may persist or recur over time.
Recovery usually takes 2–4 weeks, depending on the extent of surgery. Follow‑up appointments ensure healing is progressing well and future management is optimised.
