Laparoscopic Ovarian Cyst Removal
Laparoscopic ovarian cyst removal (ovarian cystectomy) is a minimally invasive procedure performed to remove cysts from the ovary while preserving as much normal ovarian tissue as possible. It is commonly used for benign ovarian cysts, including dermoid cysts (mature cystic teratomas), which are among the most frequent ovarian cysts in women of reproductive age.
Indications for Surgery
Surgery may be recommended for ovarian cysts when:
The cyst is large, persistent, or increasing in size
There is pelvic pain, pressure, or discomfort
The cyst has features suspicious for a dermoid or other complex cyst
There is a risk of ovarian torsion
The cyst interferes with fertility or ovarian function
Imaging findings are inconclusive and diagnosis is required
Dermoid cysts often contain fatty tissue, hair, or other benign elements. While usually non‑cancerous, they do not resolve on their own and are typically removed surgically.
How the Surgery Is Performed
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia using keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery. Small incisions are made in the abdomen, allowing insertion of a camera and fine surgical instruments. The cyst is carefully separated from the ovary with the aim of preserving healthy ovarian tissue and maintaining hormonal function and fertility.
Dermoid cysts are removed using meticulous technique to avoid spillage of cyst contents. In most cases, the cyst is placed inside a retrieval bag before removal from the abdomen. Patients can go home the same day or after an overnight stay.
Risks and Recovery
Laparoscopic ovarian cyst removal is generally safe; however, potential risks include bleeding, infection, damage to surrounding organs, adhesion formation, ovarian tissue loss, blood clots, and anaesthetic risks. In rare cases, removal of the ovary may be required if it is severely damaged.
Recovery is typically rapid, with most patients returning to normal activities within 1–2 weeks. Follow‑up ensures appropriate healing and ongoing ovarian health.
